Norm Jones
Radio and Television Studio Analyst and Reporter
Joining the Avalanche prior to its inaugural campaign in Denver, Norm Jones has enjoyed a diverse and illustrious career in Colorado sports broadcasting, both as an administrator and announcer.
He recently wrapped up his 14th season in the Avalanche radio booth this year.
Although hockey is his first love, Jones chips in as play-by-play, color commentator, or sideline reporter in various other sports. In fact, during the 2004-05 lockout year, Norm joined in the broadcasts of Colorado Eagles (CHL) hockey games, Colorado Springs Sky Sox baseball, college hockey, football and basketball, boxing, wrestling and Mammoth lacrosse. He has continued his association with the Colorado Eagles and Sky Sox as both play-by-play broadcaster and color commentator. He also serves on the selection committee for the Colorado Sports Hall-of-Fame.
Jones began his broadcasting career in 1970 in Colorado Springs, where he was the radio and television play-by-play and color personality for the Colorado College hockey team for three seasons. His next stop was the Denver Spurs minor league hockey team, where he served as Director of Public Relations and radio announcer.
In 1979, Jones made the jump to the National Hockey League when he joined the Colorado Rockies as Director of Broadcasting, while also performing the dual role as television and radio announcer for the club. Prior to joining the Rockies, Norm produced radio broadcasts for the Denver Broncos and
University of Colorado football games on 850-KOA between 1976 and 1979. He can still be seen roaming the sidelines at INVESCO Field at Mile High working as an NFL sideline coordinator.
When “Rocky Hockey” moved to New Jersey in 1982, Jones spent the next 13 years as the ice hockey voice of his alma mater, the University of Denver Pioneers. During that period, he was the play-by-play voice of DU basketball and gymnastics as well. Norm was also called upon to broadcast a limited number of Colorado/Denver Rangers minor league hockey games. Keeping himself busy during the summer, he served as the broadcaster for the Triple-A Denver Zephyrs baseball club between 1986 and 1992 before joining the Denver Grizzles in 1994 as Director of Broadcasting and television play-by-play announcer.
A life-long resident of Colorado, Norm and his wife, Susan, make their home in Highlands Ranch. They have three children: Ed, Beth and son-in-law Ted, and Mike, and are the grandparents of Nate and Gabe.
